CINEMA OBSCURA
Immersive Sound, Film, and the Space Between
Cinema Obscura reimagines the cinema itself — from a space of looking into a space of deep listening, before returning to film with renewed perception.
Travelling to unique cinemas throughout the world, Cinema Obscura creates an auditorium for deep listening in darkness, followed by a sudden emergence of moving image.
Through partnerships with leading artists, filmmakers, festivals, independent labels, and film archives, Cinema Obscura employs VVSSL’s spatial sound technology to present newly commissioned works in darkness as an overture to film screenings. Each edition is unique to its setting, developed with close consideration for the location, artist, sound, and cinematic experience.

The Experience
Cinema Obscura begins in near darkness. A spatial composition unfolds over an extended duration without light, inviting full immersion in sound. As the listening session reaches its conclusion, the final immersive tones transition into the opening viusal moments of the cinematic programme. Light returns. Moving image appears. The audience encounters film in a transformed perceptual state.
